Latvia and Lithuania are in a tough position. Can't read Lithuanian, but Latvian alt-right twitter keeps repeating and repeating in one way or another - MIGRANTS ARE NOT PEOPLE! MIGRANTS ARE BY DEFINITION CRIMINALS. This dehumanization is constant. It doesn't solve the problem. 7 atbildes

@juriskazha In Latvia we have only one stinky homeless @juriskazha who hates latvians. He is a liar who studied at the KGB.

Neither country has the capacity to handle the irregular migrant problem adequately, which makes it a weapon for stressing, polarizing and destabilizing Baltic societies.

Rather than look for quick and creative international solutions (a UNHCR mission to take over some of the migrant-detainee camps) right wing politicians bait liberals and say - take them into your homes. Except asylum seeker processimg doesn't work that way.

Then, when one "baits back" and asks a particularly vehement Latvian twitter racist whether she (like the "ordimary" Germans in Goldhagen's Hitler's Willing Excutioners) would shoot a migrant child, the lady goes foaming at the mouth angry.

@juriskazha If you live here in the Baltics you would understand. There has been capacity for migrants to appear through Belarus for years and nothing. Now thousands as Russia pushes them through to destabilise the Baltics. This is criminal act of war. No wonder there is deep unhappyness.

The sad fact is that Latvians (with 150K+ postwar refugees and maybe 200K "economic migrants" - the good White kind) are being fed a repeated message that all these other migrants are not human beings and anyone who contradicts this is a "communist."

Which is not to say that dealing with Belarus trapping maybe hundreds of people (that's what they are) on its border isn't an almost intractable problem fo Lithuania and less Latvia, which is precisely why the Belarus regime triggered it.
